Transforming Lives in Rural Nigeria: Empowering Adolescent Girls to Thrive

Association Pour La Protection Des Droits De La Jeune Fille Et De L’enfant (APDJFE)

Vision: A society where every girl and child lives in a safe, fulfilled and egalitarian environment, benefiting from all their fundamental rights, including access to quality education, adequate health care, and to protection against all forms of discrimination and violence.

CEAVAC (Educational Continuity of Vulnerable Adolescent Girls Affected by the Crisis) started in September with the aim to take into account supports 355 young girls who are vulnerable and affected by security and humanitarian crises. The project operates in the Hauts-BASSINS region in BURKINA FASO

Association des Femmes Africaines Intègres pour la Recherche et le Développement (AFAIRD)

Vision: To advocate for the women and girls to improve their living conditions, education and access for facilities on Water, Hygiene and Sanitation. AFAIRD is one of promoter of washable napkings in Cameroon, Chad and expect to move at international level.

Since 2016, AFAIRD support adolescent girls on Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) to improve their school retention through WASH facilities.

Beyond the Classroom Foundation (BCF)

Vision: Empower underserved children, especially girls, by providing transformative educational resources and support, enabling them to overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.

The Beyond Her Odds Initiative is focused on empowering girls by raising awareness of their rights, challenging restrictive social norms, and fostering confidence in them to advocate for themselves. Through mentorship, education, and community-based programs, BHO helps girls develop the skills and confidence they need to overcome obstacles, break barriers, and become leaders in their communities.

Association Action pour un Monde Meilleur (AMM)

Vision: An inclusive world, where every individual, regardless of their abilities, can achieve their full potential.

Founded in 2013, the Association Action pour un Monde Meilleur (AMM) is the result of the determination of a group of women with disabilities determined to create a significant impact in their community. The AMM is a collective force that believes in inclusion as the key to building a just and equitable society. Together, let's shape a better world where the rights of women with disabilities are celebrated and protected.

Association Des Femmes Et Filles De L’adamaoua (AFFADA)

With expertise and efficiency, AFFADA contributes to sustainable improvements in the well-being of women, girls, and the broader population in Cameroon through social and humanitarian initiatives and active participation in development efforts.

The project aims to support adolescent girls’ school retention in Cameroon’s Adamaoua, North, and Far North Regions by improving their access to education. It engages traditional authorities, particularly notable women, to raise parental awareness and provides material support to at-risk girls.

Association des jeunes femmes entreprenantes du burkina (AJFEB)

Vision: Reduce gender-based discrimination that limits women’s and girls' employment, access to economic resources like land, education, and credit, reinforcing dependence and limiting family and decision-making roles. Also address physical and psychological violence (e.g., domestic violence, sexual abuse) and harmful social norms, which, along with low education, religious, and economic factors, worsen these issues.

Contribute to significantly reducing the vulnerability of young adolescent girls in the Kadiogo province by improving their access to education and protection against gender-based violence (GBV).

FORUM DES FEMMES CITOYENNES ET ENGAGEES POUR LA GOUVERNANCE LA DEMOCRATIE ET LE DEVELOPPEMENT (FOFECEGDD)

Vision: Promoting the rights of women and girls by fighting all forms of violence to which they are subject and by promoting the values positive, while calling for their increasing inclusion in the bodies and decision-making process at local and national level.

Our project with IGNITE aims to contribute significantly to the achievement of SDGs 4 and 5, by promoting schooling and empowering adolescent girls living in the peripheral environment of Kinshasa through prevention and the fight against inequalities gender in education caused by retrograde social norms.

MarBen Foundation

Vision: To create a world where every child in rural and remote communities has equal access to quality education, fostering a foundation for limitless possibilities and breaking barriers to educational equity with a focus on rural girls and children with disabilities.

Mar-Bridge Academy is an alternative free school for out of school girls, who have been forced to drop out due to teenage pregnancy, early marriage, financial challenges, displacement , religious and cultural practices etc. Through the academy, they access accelerated program that helps equip them with core competence with the aim of reintegration into mainstream schools at an age appropriate class.

Centre de Formation et d’Action pour le Developpement (CFAD)

Vision: CFAD's mission is to contribute to the sustainable improvement of the living conditions of vulnerable people.

Our project is entitled "All together for the education of adolescent girls and other marginalized groups in Kalonge in the Kalehe territory". This project aims to improve access to quality education for adolescent girls in the Kalehe3 educational sub-division in the Kalonge Health zone in Kalehe territory with a focus on marginalized adolescent girls whose age varies between 10 and 19 years old.

Eur¡ka Yebego Adragot Dirigit (‘Eur¡ka’)

Vision: To “pursue any action seeking a sustainable progress of
children’s rights and well-being such as development or humanitarian projects.


Our IGNITE project aims to provide comprehensive support to marginalized adolescent girls in the Central and North Gondar Zones of Amhara Region, Ethiopia. The project focuses on girls who have experienced gender-based violence (GBV), early marriage, or disability, and are at risk of dropping out of
school. 

Association Parler D’Elles ( APDL)

Vision: An African continent where every woman is a driving force for change, fully autonomous and invested with all its potential to shape a more just and prosperous future

IRAP, IGNITE research and advocacy project supported by IGNITE, is dedicated to understanding the complex interplay between social norms, education, and sexual and
reproductive health rights among internally displaced adolescent girls in Douala and Limbé. IRAP aims to shed light on the significant impact this crisis has had on internally displaced adolescent girls, empowering their voices and those of their community leaders with strong scientific background.

Girls Excel

Vision: Empowering adolescent girls and young women through access to education to make informed decisions about their health and rights

Through the IGNITE Grant, Girls Excel aims to increase the institutional capacity of Girls Excel to challenge social and traditional norms that disempower adolescent girls and limit their ability to access education such as poverty, period poverty, gender-based violence, child, forced and early marriages etc.

Humanitarian Response Actions (HURAC)

Vision: To work for a more inclusive world with particular emphasis on taking gender into account, and it promote and implement actions that provide responses to the problems of populations in distress.

As an implementing partner, HURAC aims to address the challenges of low enrollment, which are heightened by tensions, crises, and conflicts in the North-West and South-West (NOSO) regions, as well as by religious and cultural pressures within Cameroon’s minority and conservative communities. This project primarily targets young girls from the Bororo minority community, with 80% coming from conflict regions and 20% from the MIFI Department in Cameroon’s West region.

Her Voice Foundation

Vision: We envision a world where every teenage mother and at-risk girl is given a second chance to thrive, gain control of her life, and reach their desired future.

Her Voice Foundation (HVF), formerly known as Campus Babe Initiative (CBI), is tackling the increasing number of out-of-school girls as a result of teenage pregnancy by providing at-risk girls with Sexual and Reproductive Health Education (SRHR) and combating harmful cultural practices that affect girls’ ability to live free from all forms of Gender-Based Violence and lead their best lives.

 

Jeunes Professionnels pour le Développement pour le Développement Agricole ( YPARD RDC)

Vision: A Congo without poverty thanks to the engagement of young people in agriculture.

The project supports the education and economic empowerment of 300 adolescent girls (including 30 with disabilities) aged 10-19 who are at risk of dropping out, along with 100 vulnerable young mothers aged 16-23. It also involves 8 pilot gender-neutral secondary schools, 1,200 secondary students, and 5,000 households in the intervention areas. With $80,000 in funding over 18 months, the project is implemented in Kinshasa (Kimbanseke) and Kongo Central (Kasangulu).

Joy Development Organization(JDO)

Vision: JDO wishes to see strong social attachment, economically developed, well educated and healthy society in Ethiopia.

JDO is implementing 2 projects with financial support from IGNITE. The first project aims to address the socio-economic and demographic factors to education faced by adolescent girls in Ethiopia, particularly in Hawassa Zuria, Wolaita Zuria, and Arba Minch Zuria. The second project focuses on addressing various socio-economic and cultural issues that hinder girls' education. 

Nutrition 4 Education & Development (N4ED)

Vision: To become a leading non-profit organization dedicated to empowering vulnerable communities, particularly women and girls. By empowering households, we aim to improve children's health, nutrition, and overall development, helping future generations achieve their full potential and contributing to meaningful poverty reduction.

Our project focuses on three key objectives: incorporating gender equality, life skills, and empowerment into education through sustainable gender clubs in schools; fostering collaboration among stakeholders like schools, community leaders, and law enforcement to create a protective environment for girls; and enhancing the capacity of government services to keep vulnerable girls in school.

Nkong Hill Top Association for Development (NADEV)

Vision: To see communities in Cameroon that are empowered, equitable, sustainable and living in harmony by accelerating growth opportunities for women, youth and children, leveraging grassroots initiatives.

Our project seeks to promote adolescent girls’ access to education that enables them to enjoy their full potential, equal status with boys and become agents of change by enhancing the skills of teachers in delivering gender-responsive education, fostering an inclusive learning environment, giving voice to adolescent girls and harnessing multistakeholder commitment for advocacy.

OFRA NAHUM (OFRA)

Vision: To promote socio-economic empowerment for women and girls, aiding them in income generation, access to resources, and participation in development initiatives.

This project, in partnership with IGNITE's "Action to Combat School Dropout in Young Girls," aims to address challenges such as low school attendance, dropout rates, and associated issues like early marriage, unplanned pregnancies, and STIs, including HIV. It is an integrated initiative focused on protecting girls from the consequences of child marriage, sexual and domestic violence, gender-based violence, and female genital mutilation, with a strong emphasis on safeguarding those who are already married or at risk.

Réseau Camerounais des Organisations des Droits de l’Homme (ONG RECODH)

Vision: To contribute to the emergence of a civil society firmly committed to the promotion and protection of the well-being of citizens.

The “Advocacy and Local Actions for the Schooling of Indigenous Bagyeli and Bakola Girls and Adolescents” project aims to empower the Bagyeli people, focusing on young girls’ education. Its main objective is to enhance access to education for young indigenous Bagyeli and Bakola girls. This includes promoting the value of education and vocational training (Objective 1), fostering a collaborative network between schools, training centers, and communities (Objective 2), and encouraging stronger community support and involvement.

Eshet Children and Youth Development Organization ( ECYDO)

Vision: ECYDO envisions seeing a safe, clean, and happy environment for every child and youth in Ethiopia to grow in; with access to education, health services, and equal opportunities.

Since 2019, ECYDO has been implementing the Girls Empowerment project known as BEST Girls - Being Empowered, Strong, and Together in Adama City Administration, specifically in the area formerly known as Logo sub-city, Bika Kebele. Over the past six years, the BEST Girls Project has significantly impacted the lives of adolescent girls in this community.

Solidarité des Jeunes Filles pour l’Education et l’Intégration Socioprofessionnelle (SOJFEP)

Vision: We envision a world where indigenous girls, young women, and other marginalized groups truly hold power: have autonomy over their bodies, participate actively in decision-making, and enjoy equal access to services, resources, and opportunities. 

The "Power, Voice, and Resources for Girls" Project aims to promote gender equality by supporting the education and empowerment of girls. This initiative will build the skills of indigenous Pygmy adolescents and other vulnerable girls, enabling them to exercise their rights and participate actively in decision-making on education and empowerment.

SOS ENFANTS

Vision: A society of justice, equity and dignity which guarantees the rights of children and social development

A consortium of three associations (SOS ENFANTS, RAMZIYA, and AEJF) received the IGNITE grant to foster collaborative efforts aimed at improving access to education and supporting girls' retention in Burkina Faso’s education system. SOS ENFANTS will focus on providing direct support to vulnerable girls and strengthening mothers' associations; RAMZIYA will handle capacity building and advocacy with educational authorities and community leaders in the Hauts Bassins and Cascades regions; and AEJF will receive institutional support on gender and governance to better manage programs that benefit young girls’ education.

Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI)

Vision: To advocate for the protection of rights of women, girls and children with disabilities, and mainstreaming of disability inclusive programs into government strategy in Nigeria.

Association SEMBE

Vision: Empowering youth and women in conflict-affected communities to heal from trauma, foster lasting peace, and create sustainable opportunities that uplift their lives and transform their communities.

The Sahel Girl’s Power Project in Cameroon focuses on empowering girls in conflict-affected communities by enhancing their education and life opportunities. Through training teachers on gender equality and positive discipline, the project ensures schools are safe, respectful, and protective environments for girls. It also promotes community engagement by organizing dialogues and campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of girls' education, tackling barriers like poverty, insecurity, and cultural norms.
